1.Since 1991 manatee population has increased, 123%. Where as in the same amount of time manatee boat related fatalities have increased only 50%.
2. Manatees are not indigenous to Florida. Like the
armadillo, fire ants and killer bees, these floating
speed bumps came here from another country, in this
case, the West Indies. Florida used to have an
indigenous manatee species, but they were wiped out by
the indians several thousand years ago. The proof is
in the fossil records. Manatees are the only
non-native species afforded legal protection.
2. One of the major manatee groups stated that "manatee deaths continue to climb — causing manatees to sink further toward extinction" and " only an estimated 2,400 (manatees) survive in the wild in Florida's coastal waters." However, last month scientists counted an all time record 3,276 manatees in statewide aerial surveys; more than double the number counted 10 years ago.
